V. And it is further ordained and enacted, by the Authority aforesaid, That whatsoever Person or Persons, inhabiting or residing upon this Island, or hither trading, shall keep any Boat or Boats, Canoe, Periagoe, or any Vessel whatsoever (the said Vessel being in any Road, Harbour, or Creek of this Island), the Owner or Owners thereof shall, during the Time of her being there, keep the Masts, Oars, Sails, Rudder, and Paddels, to the said Boat or Vessel belonging, if it be of small Burthen, at his or their own House, or some other secure Place on Shore, and also secure the Boat with a Lock and Chain; but if so great a Burthen that these Things cannot with Conveniency be landed, then the said Owner or Owners shall cause good Watch continually to be kept on Board.
VI. And it is further ordained and enacted, by the Authority aforesaid, That if any Person or Persons inhabiting, residing, or being on this Island, shall make Escape or run away with any such Boat or Vessel, through the Neglect of securing, as aforesaid, if the Person or Persons escaping, being free, the Owner or Master of such Vessel or Boat, shall satisfy and pay the Debt of the Person or Persons so escaping, and make good what Damage soever shall be sustained by any Inhabitant of this Island by reason of the said Escape; but if the Person or Persons be Servants or Slaves, then the Owner or Master shall make good double Damages, to the Owner of such Servant or Slaves so escaping or running off; the which Damages are to be recovered in the Courts Judicatory of this Island by Virtue of this Statute.
